How to Record a Slack Huddle on Mac (With Transcript and Notes)

Updated

Slack doesn't save an audio recording of a huddle. On paid plans, Slack's AI notes can create a summary and transcript, but everyone in the huddle is notified, and AI notes don't work when external people or guests are in the huddle. To keep your own recording of any huddle, record it on your Mac with an app that captures your microphone and the call audio, then get a transcript and notes after the call.

This guide uses Rebrief for Mac, which records the huddle without joining it and writes the transcript and notes on your Mac after the call.

Can you record a Slack huddle?

Not with Slack itself. Slack's huddle help page covers video, screen sharing, a huddle thread, a shared canvas for notes and live captions, but no way to save the audio. Live captions are English only and are not saved once the huddle ends.

The closest built-in option is AI notes. According to Slack's help page, checked on 19 October 2026:

  • AI notes are available on paid plans, to members but not guests.
  • Someone in the huddle turns them on, or a channel can start them automatically for every huddle.
  • Everyone in the huddle is notified when notes are started, stopped or canceled.
  • After the huddle, the notes go into a canvas in the huddle thread, with the transcript embedded. Anyone in the channel or DM can view them.
  • AI notes can't be used in huddles with external people or guests.

If your huddle is internal, your team is on a paid plan and a shared summary is all you need, use AI notes. Record on your Mac instead when guests or people from another company are in the huddle, when you want the audio itself, or when you want a private copy that stays on your Mac.

How to record a Slack huddle on Mac, step by step

  1. Check your Mac. Rebrief needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later. There is no Intel version.
  2. Install Rebrief and finish setup before the huddle. Allow microphone access and permission to record what your Mac plays (System Settings, Privacy and Security, Screen and System Audio Recording). Without the second permission, the recording has only your side.
  3. Let the models download once. After that, recording, transcription and notes work offline.
  4. Tell the people in the huddle that you're recording. More on this in the consent note below.
  5. Join the huddle in the Slack desktop app or in your browser. If you switched on automatic recording, Rebrief starts when Slack uses your microphone and speakers at the same time. If you're only listening, start the recording yourself from the menu bar.
  6. Check that the recording is running before the part you need to keep.
  7. Stop the recording when the huddle ends. With automatic recording on, Rebrief stops on its own when the call ends.

Free recordings stop and save at 15 minutes, with full transcription, notes and export. For longer huddles, a one-time purchase removes the limit. Every recording still has a hard eight-hour limit and stops before the Mac sleeps.

Rebrief records everything your Mac plays, including notification sounds, so pause notifications and music first. A short test huddle with a colleague shows whether both sides are recorded.

Recording huddles with clients, guests and Slack Connect

Because Rebrief records the audio on your Mac, it works the same whether the other people are members, guests, or people from another company in a Slack Connect channel. No bot joins the huddle, no participant appears and there is no join sound. That also means Slack shows nothing to the other people, so agree to the recording at the start.

During the huddle, ask for an owner or a date when a commitment is vague. The recording keeps the exact wording, but it can't supply an answer nobody gave. Post any design or document links in the huddle thread too. Rebrief records audio only, so something shown on a shared screen may need written context later.

Getting a transcript and notes after the huddle

When the recording stops, Rebrief transcribes it on your Mac. This happens after the call, not live. Your microphone and the call audio are recorded as two separate tracks, and the language of each side is detected on its own, across 99 languages. Rebrief identifies speakers and remembers voices you've named in later meetings.

The notes cover what happened, decisions, key points, action points and open questions. To find a detail later, use Ask, which answers questions across your recorded meetings and shows the transcript lines each answer came from. Transcripts export as Markdown, plain text, SRT or WebVTT, both audio tracks can be saved, and notes copy as Markdown.

Treat the notes as a draft. Check names, dates and conditions against the transcript, and listen to the passage again when a speaker label or a phrase is unclear.

Sharing a recap with the client

Keep the full transcript in Rebrief and send the client a short recap that covers:

  • The decisions that change the work, including anything explicitly left unchanged.
  • Each agreed action, its owner, and the date or condition attached to it.
  • Questions that still need an answer before work can proceed.
  • Links needed to understand or carry out those actions.

A proposed date should stay tentative, and an action that depends on approval should keep that condition. Leave an unresolved owner or deadline visible instead of guessing. If the huddle was a first conversation with a new client, the discovery call notes template helps you sort what you heard, and you can turn the call transcript into a project brief once the scope is clear.

Put the recap where the client can reply

The huddle thread is a good place for the recap when everyone who needs it can see it. Check that first: Slack says people you invite to a huddle who aren't members of the channel or DM can't see its messages or the huddle thread. Being on the call doesn't guarantee access to the follow-up.

If the thread leaves someone out, post the recap in a shared conversation that includes them, with the huddle's date and subject. Rebrief doesn't post into Slack, so paste the notes and check the formatting. Ask the client to confirm owners and dates, and keep any correction next to the recap so colleagues can follow the change.

Common questions

Does Slack notify people if you record a huddle?

Slack notifies everyone when AI notes are started, stopped or canceled. Rebrief adds nothing to the huddle, so Slack shows no notice when you record with it. That is why you should tell people yourself.

Can you record a huddle in the Slack browser app?

Yes. Huddles work in Chrome and Firefox as well as the desktop app, and Rebrief records what your Mac plays, including browser tabs. If the recording doesn't start on its own, start it from the menu bar.

Does it record screen sharing?

No. Rebrief records audio only, not video or the shared screen. Any sound your Mac plays during the huddle is recorded, but anything that was only on screen needs a link or a written note.

Can I record other calls the same way?

Yes, the same steps work for Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and other apps. See how to record and transcribe a Zoom call on Mac without a bot.

Tell people you're recording

Tell everyone in the huddle that you're recording and what you'll do with it, and follow your client's and your company's rules. Recording laws differ by country and state, and some require everyone's consent. Rebrief doesn't announce itself in the call, so saying it out loud at the start is your job.

To try it, record your next short huddle with permission. The free 15 minutes are enough to check the transcript and notes before a longer client call.
